"Mighty
Real - A Tribute To Sylvester" Djola Branner Review by: Len I was extremely pleased when I first learned of "Mighty Real - A Tribute To Sylvester", as I have been a long time enthusiast. Djola Branner not only does justice to the work but breathes new life in classic Sylvester form. Not a duplication of Sylvester, but a true tribute to him, his performance, and technique. Branner brings vibrant energy, and personal attributes combined with a voice which empowers the material with talented understanding and thorough delivery. |
The 'get up on your feet' strength of Sylvester's material is definitely present. Accompaniment, back-up and Branner work together like a fine tuned instrument to bring forth the most the music may deliver, and that is a lot! Sitting still and writing this review while listening is a test of self control. For every fiber wants to jump, shout and otherwise make a joyful noise, again.
Sylvester classics like; "Do Ya Wanna Funk", "Can't Stop Dancing", "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" all shine and offer fresh excitement and a strong desire for movement. Performed with traditional respect. Yet, Branner makes these songs his own. "I Tried To Forget You" and "Changes" show Djola's emotion and talent are compliments to the original Sylvester works. Final selection, "You Will Be The One" original by Branner/Blackburn is an upbeat Sylvesteresque tribute to the musician which does honor in style, lyrics, music, and delivery. A strong CD which is not easily overlooked. Mighty Real: A Tribute to Sylvester is part of a multi-media theater production of the same name which premiered in Minneapolis, June, 2000.
