Mel Keegan Wing "The Deceivers" |
Book Review "The Deceivers" By; Mel Keegan Review By; Joe Wright / Mountman I have read several of Mel’s Sci-Fi novels, and now with “The Deceivers”, I have read one of his wonderful Gay Romances. You can tell, from the start that Mr. Keegan did his homework. The pace was a little slow at first, but it really gave you the feel of the time. The time is the 1860’s; the place, is the east coast of England. Adventure on the high seas! Not only is there adventure, additionally there is also treachery, lust, love, intrigue, hatred, change, and acceptance. |
As the song says, “these times, they are a changing”. With the invention of the steam locomotive with its railway systems and the first steam powered ships, you can feel the slow death of the way of life for the people of that time. But as with the legendary Phoenix, out of the ashes comes a new way of life for the next generation to come along. Our protagonists for “The Deceivers” come from that generation. Bill Ryan and Jim Hale are very 3 dimensional characters. Bill is a sea captain, Jim is the soon to be owner, by way of inheritance, of the ship of which Bill is captain. They also happen to be lovers. At a time when Gay love was the “love that cannot speak its name”, you get a glimpse of what it must have been like in 1862 England.
I would love to see Mr. Keegan share more adventures of Bill and Jim in a series of stories as they live their lives as one.Return to Mel Keegan Wing Entrance.
