CD Review "Brave" By: Kevin Allred: Review By Len Rogers Sometimes clarity, simplicity, and basic are wonderful words. That is definitely the case with Kevin Allred's new CD "Brave". That being; clarity of message and delivery, simplicity of sound, and basic in terms of direct forthright songwriting. All work hand in hand with Kevin's desire to create a project about a seemingly simple premise, 'brave'. Fourteen tracks bring a healthy helping of Kevin Allred, and that in itself is a very good thing. The theme as stated is a focus on 'brave'. When I asked Kevin about this he said, "The word brave like love is so overused today. I wanted to examine the aspects of being brave." In other words an entire CD dealing with different concepts of brave. Being consistent, steady, and confident in various way. |
From the initial track, "Lone Way Home" to the ending, "Ugly Little Town" Allred shares his take and view on all things where brave plays a part in his life. That includes but not limited to growing up, being an adult, loving, lost love, friendship, and memories. The thoughts are of course introspective yet each song brings a very familiar feel and message that this reviewer found easily relatable. That Kevin choose to keep it simple with basically guitar and occasionally piano puts the focus on the words and singer. A decision I found to be musically exciting and as a listener commanding. No distractions, just pure Kevin Allred delivered in force with a simple honest bite.
Make no mistake this is not a CD based on word tricks and manipulations. But rather real feelings and deep messages. All pertaining in some way to the concept of again the word, 'brave'. It would be very difficult to pick favorites as each song touches on specific yet momentous subjects and happenings on the road of life. We all have unique experiences and lives. Yet somehow Kevin brings it all to a point where the similarities of our experiences breath relatable emotion and reaction for us all. The song "Daylight" deals with social pressure and rejection. In a manner which is universal. And that universality is one area where I think Kevin Allred excels. In many ways an every person's songwriter, Allred like legendary Woody Guthrie, makes his vision yours. You feel his pain, you hear his message like one of your own. A very special gift. Wonderfully shared.
This is not only a theme CD but a true musical journey CD. Kevin picks you up on track one and delivers you satisfied and wanting more at the end of track fourteen. This old hippie would have been ecstatic and bubbling with joy at being able to share this music back in the day. So you can well imagine my excitement at being able to share it now. Even better, that Allred's type of musical skill is so unusual and special. All we need is the lava lamp, group of friends passing around the album artwork and liner notes. We have the music, the feelings, and the words. So lets talk about this very special musical experience that is Kevin Allred and "Brave". I promise you the talk will be good!
