"Sexual Orientation
& School Policy A Practical Guide For Teachers, Administration, and Community Activists" By Ian K. MacGillivray A Review By Mountman/Joe Wright As the title suggests, this book is an excellent guide for anyone that wants to help protect our youth, so that they will feel safe and can concentrate on learning. From the back cover, “Sexual Orientation and School Policy is a case study of one school district’s attempt to adopt and implement policies that include sexual orientation.” As an adult that suffered anti-gay harassment from students and teachers alike in school, I find this a wonderful book. To think of what it would have been like to have such policies in place when I was in school, I wonder where I would be today. |
This school district wanted to include GLBTIQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgendered, Intersexed, and Queer/questioning) to their discrimination policies. It would be nice if there would be a blanket policy that included all peoples. In other words, just No Discrimination or Harassment of any kind! I guess that that just only happens in fairytales. Sometimes it needs to be spelled out.
Sexual Orientation and School Policy take you along on the journey of one school districts attempts to make their schools Safe for all! All the meetings, discussions, all the movements forward, and the setbacks.
If you or the schools in your district are starting to look at anti-gay harassment and their policies, or if the policies don’t exist, then this book can be your roadmap on your journey.
