In Concert: Natalia Zukerman

In Concert: Natalia Zukerman
by Ran

If the name sounds familiar it's because she is the daughter of violinist/conductor Pinchus Zukerman and flutist/writer Eugenia Zukerman.  She started her musical training on a violin, her sister is an opera singer, and her background is primarily classical music.  In spite of this background Natalia has created her own intriguing style!

The Earlville Opera House presented Natalia on May 20, 2006, to a meager but appreciative audience.  The ad for the gig promised "original folk with hints of jazz, blues and soul with earthy 'come-hither' vocals."  We got all that and a lot more.  The announcer covered the obligatory cautions to the audience and also mentioned that there would be home-made pies available at intermission.  As Natalia walked on stage, she said "Are you so excited about the pie?  I always remember the food at every venue."  She then launched into her acoustic performance, which emphasized many of the songs from her new CD "only one."  I was immediately impressed with her beautiful voice.  Her melodic voice is soothing, sultry and sweet!  This singer/songwriter presented a collection of songs/stories which are not simply written, but crafted to reflect her laid-back persona. The tunes are filled with imagery of her fascinating life experiences.

Combined with her articulate voice is an interesting delivery style, which includes skat, sampling other famous song lyrics and improvising the lyrics (especially about the space heater in her dressing room).  After the tenth composition she told us, "I'll play this one and then we can go have some pie.  I'm fixated."

Her instrument playing was equally as impressive, playing both an acoustic guitar and a lap slide guitar.  Through these instruments she took us through jazz, folk and even country tunes. It is always a pleasure to listen to an accomplished musician.

She is very well traveled, telling us about her travels in Texas , Cuba , New Orleans , Massachusetts , South Carolina and Alaska . She was literally a verbal travelogue.  She can be funny as well, telling us about a web site that she enjoys, entitled "stuffonmycat.com."  She mentioned her upbringing, coming from a kosher house; half Red Sox, half Yankees--never the two should meet.  She also told us a humorous story about what she has done to maintain her credibility as a folk singer.

"I have had a really, really nice time with you tonight."  So did I, it was an entertaining evening of wonderful music.  I had looked forward to meeting this fellow member of Outmusic. We chatted at intermission and she is a very kewl person. I enjoyed all of the songs that I heard, but I was especially fond of "More," "Only One," "Afraid of Everything," and "Haunted House." Just before her encore, she said "if you could all fit in my Honda Civic, I'd take you with me!"  She said that she lives with three long haired cats in a little fishing town north of Boston , hmmm, I wonder if they make good pies there?  I recommend that you take the time to acquaint yourself with this fascinating artist online at www.nataliazukerman.com
