He's an incredibly talented performer; I liked his voice, his music and his lyrics. At 25, he barely looked older than the students that he was performing for. I did like his black rimmed glasses (they made me think of a mad scientist--wink!). During his acoustic show he played both a guitar and an electric piano. He performed a number of original songs from his latest CD, "Stark." He started the show with a song entitled "Promises." The songs that he performed from "Stark" were my favorites, such as "Dry," "Upside Down," and "Sail The Sea." He said that the song "Dry," was "sorta about my love life." This song included some great guitar work. He also played a song called "Witness of Us," which he wrote for Alison Krauss--"she's never sung it, but I hope that someday she will." When he moved to the electric piano, he announced, "now for a softer side of Gregory Douglass." He mentioned that he just got "Upside Down" played in an independent film, which is quite an accomplishment. He is rather humorous, he kept telling us funny personal antidotes, for instance, his attempt to learn French. "The mp3 I have on French, there are five minutes of basics like 'Someone stole my wallet,' 'Fire,' and 'I need a lawyer.'" Those are phrases that I hope he never needs! He did a guitar cover of Melissa Ferrick's up-tempo "Till You're Dead," it was a fast and furious song. After that song he quipped "I'd like to thank my band..." I really enjoyed the song "Virginia," which is about his mother. "Her name is Glory, but I had trouble with her name, so I changed it to Virginia." I had to laugh at his comment, "it's a good thing that I'm the funniest person I know [a brief hesitation] and the answer is YES, I say that at every gig." Just before his encore he said to the audience, "You guys are awesome--and I don't say THAT at every show." His encore was a lively tune called "Welcome Back" from his CD "Teeter."
I liked his pleasant, breathy voice, but his performing style is unique. The way that he moves his head while he's singing is unusual and it distracted me during his performance. I was already a bit distracted--because he's cute, but I ought to have paid more attention to his lyrics. The man is prolific, he has already recorded five CDs, and his music definitely commands attention! You can find this talented young man online at <www.gregorydouglass.com>.
