Benjamin Benneker
Benjamin"s mother was a Free Mulatto and his father was a former slave, who had bought his freedom. He worked with the survey team that surveyed Washington D.C. He is also noted for the first clock that was constructed in the U.S.
He wrote a letter to the Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. Here is an excerpt from the letter: "I suppose it is a truth too well attested to you to need proof here, that we are a race of beings who have long labored under the abuse and censure of the world, that we have been looked upon with the eye of contempt; and that we have long been considered rather brutish than human and scarcely capable of mental endowments."
