Recipes

Here you will find different recipes and uses for essential oils. They may sound like they may cost a lot but remember this little formula - 100 drops = 1teaspoon = 5ml, 300 drops = 1 tablespoon = 15ml, 600 drops = 1 ounce = 30 ml.

"Personal blends; In a clean container, add a total of 8 to 12 drops of any single oil or combination of oils of your choice to 1/8 ounce of JoJoba oil, or mix one of the" following " blends. Mix the oils by gently turning the container upside down several times or by rolling it between your hands for a few minutes. Do not shake the mixture forcefully. Apply the blend as a fragrance or simply inhale it directly from the bottle, as needed.

Baths; Add a total of 3 to 10 drops of any single oil or a combination of oils you choose, or use one of the suggested... to a bathtub filled with warm water. Soak in the bath for twenty minutes. Repeat as needed." I always suggest that you swirl the water around to blend the oils. You want to use less oils if you have sensitive skin.

"Diffuser or lamp blends; choose any of the single oils mentioned or a combination of 2 or more of those oils or one of the recommended blends. Drop the essential oils into a small glass bottle and combine. Add the blend to your diffuser or lamp. For a diffuser follow the manufacture's directions. For a lamp, place 10 to 20 drops of a single oil or blend in the lamp bowl. Run the diffuser or lamp as needed." You can find one of these items at a health food store. I have found that there is a cool device made by the Crockpot people. It's an electric potpourri burner. I fill it with water and then add the essential oils to it. But remember, you don't need to add the carrier oil(such as JoJoba).

The following combinations are some that I have used that work well for me. These came from a book called Aromatherapy and Massage for People With Learning Difficulties By Sanderson, Harrison & Price (Hands On Publishing and Training 1991). The combinations and proportions of essential oils can be used in the bath, in compresses, diffused, or in a massage oil.

For Aches and Pains - Use 1 drop of Chamomile, 2 drops of Lavender, 1 drop Marjoram, and 1 drop of Rosemary.

With all the new products for headaches I thought I would share with you a story about the time I helped a nurse that I worked with. She came into my office and said that she had to go to home because she was getting a migraine. Her migraines became so intense that she would have to go into a dark room and lay there with all the lights out till it went away.

I asked her to try aromatherapy. I made up a blend of essential oils with a massage oil. I used 3 drops Marjoram, 3 drops lavender, and 3 drops chamomile with 1/2 oz. of sweet almond oil(the massage/carrier oil). She rubbed it on her temples and went to sit down. She came back 20 minutes later, saying it worked!

For Detoxifying - 2 drops of Geranium, 2 drops of Juniper and 1 drop of Lavender.

To relieve Thrush - 3 drops of Lavender and 3 Drops of Tea tree. This combination can also be applied directly to Acne.

Remember if you use any of these in a bath remember to always put the oils in the bath water while it is running. Before getting in make sure that there are no hot spots (areas where the oil is not mixed well with the water). You can do this by swishing the water around with your hand.

Caution: There are some oils to be avoided if you have Epilepsy! They are - aniseed, dill, fennel, hyssop and sage. If you have high blood pressure avoid hyssop, rosemary, sage, and thyme.

As I said, when I first heard of Aromatherapy, I was working with the developmentally disabled. I was working with a young lady that would sleep about 10-15% of the night. I would make a blend of the oils of 3 part Marjoram, 2 part Rose Geranium, and 1 part Lavender. I would then fix a bath with 2 drops of the blend and let her soak for 20 minutes just before bed. While she was soaking I would put 2 drops of the blend on a piece of gauze and place this in her pillow case. After doing this she would sleep for 90-95% of the night. I use this blend, for myself whenever I've had a trying day or I just want to

Aromatherapy can enhance your life in many ways. It does a lot for your emotional state. It can decrease undesirable emotions and increase desirable ones. If you are angry a lot of the time, this can be due to stress. "Essential oils recommended for fighting feelings of anger are Chamomile, jasmine, marjoram, rose, rosemary, and ylang ylang.

Calming Personal Blend: 1/8 ounce JoJoba oil, 3 drops chamomile oil, 3 drops ylang ylang oil, 1 drop jasmine absolute, 1 drop rose oil.

Add the essential oils to the JoJoba oil and blend. Follow the above directions

Bath Blend for Releasing Anger: 3 drops chamomile oil, 3 drops ylang ylang oil, 2 drops marjoram oil.

Disperse the essential oils in a bathtub full of warm water. Follow the above directions.

Diffuser Blend for Diminishing Anger: 20 drops chamomile oil, 18 drops rosemary oil, 10 drops ylang ylang oil.

Drop the essential oils into a small glass container with an airtight cover and combine. Follow the above directions.

relax.

As always, with any medicinal products, use with caution. If you don't know what to do consult someone that does. There is a lot of books on the subject. Check out your public library.
