CD Review
Derek Bishop Derek Bishop's "Resistance Is Beautiful" is the proof to a point I love to make. That being, music and or art has no shelf life. Released in 2011, I was just introduced to Derek's music and to "Resistance Is Beautiful". I cannot imagine being more excited in 2011 than I am now to discover this timeless and classic release. Ageless in style and sound, Derek delivers a smorgasbord of musical style, sound, and emotion. Excelled pop combines with some jazz, Latin, blues, and even a smidge of that wonderful 70's - 80's classic 'move-it' sound to bring "Resistance Is Beautiful" to a very full appeal. Produced by Derek Bishop and Jay Braun, "Resistance Is Beautiful" is a distinctly tasty vision of the singer / songwriter/ musician in fine form. Nothing held back, and full throttle open on all delivery. Mischievous lyrics and |
music bring smiles and recognition of familiar tones and themes. Catchy tunes and lyrics with bite, style, and humor grab you much like a warm serving of oatmeal sticks to your ribs and warms you on a cold winter morning. Tempo, drive, and message all work together to make Derek's musical journey one to savor and remember. A splash of some Broadway style, backed with Derek's ability to turn a phrase, make many moments of "Resistance Is Beautiful" immediate memories. Just as personable and relevant as tunes we have hummed for ages.
Twelve tracks make "Resistance Is Beautiful" a bountiful source of the Derek Bishop experience. All bringing you various takes on style, genre, tempo, theme and lyrical depth. Which means a damned interesting and most pleasant musical experience. Bishop delivers his music with intent. Setting the CD so that you are deliberately guided through his musical event. Derek directs you almost like a narrator, through his project, with adept attention. At moments, I was reminded of the narrator from shows like "Pippin". Not that Bishop narrates his CD, but his lyrics and line-up surely guide you purpose and awesome intent. Derek has a mischievous way with lyrics and his music. He can deliver a message of disdain and yet leave you humming with a smile. With a dance step or two lingering on as with "Take Him Away". All in all, "Resistance Is Beautiful" is what I call 'comfort music'. Makes you feel good, want to move about, and wraps you with a strong desire for more. Can't get better than that. Well maybe with another Derek Bishop CD on the way we can!
